A Practical Understanding of Ceramic Substances

This course is designed to fill the gaps for any level of student, artist or potter that wants to learn about materials and substances used in ceramics. We will examine the characteristics of clay and glaze minerals through experiments and examination. We will discuss plastic and non-plastic clays, suspending agents, slips and underglazes, characteristics of glaze fluxes, and alterations for glazes. Presentations such as mixing a glaze, making a terra sigillata, and creating line blends will be explored.

Ceramics- Beginning/Intermediate Ceramics

Learn all the potters' basics - centering, throwing simple forms on the wheel and glazing. Learn intermediate techniques of combined forms, pulling handles, making lids, advanced glazing, etc. This class allows for a variety of ceramics skill levels.

  Ceramics - Throwing on the Wheel

This will be a throwing class in which students challenge themselves to not only develop a personal style but also an awareness of the total process of creating a functional piece of pottery. Included in this class will be demonstrations of the creation of simple forms (mugs, small bowls, and plates) along with more complex forms (covered bakers, large platters, and bowls). Also covered with be slip trailing, sgrafitto, and glaze formulation

Colored Clay and Colored Slips

Love bright color, but not a fan of glazing? Learn to create your work in colored clay and colored slips. Paint, inlay, texture, throw, sgraffito, print - explore the world of colored clay. All ability levels wecome.

  Ceramics - Anything Can Happen
Bring your hopes, ideas, and questions to this wheel throwing class. You choose the goals and decide what you want to accomplish. Projects can include absolutely anything: specific form; throwing big; altering; combining throwing and hand building; exploring surface techniques such as slips, carving, and glazing. The sky is the limit with the emphasis on keeping it fun.

  Ceramics - Sculpture

Designed to expand the knowledge of the sculptural ceramic world, you will explore various techniques and artists to inspire you to create your own pieces of art.

Wheel Doctor

Are you struggling with certain forms or shapes? Would you like extra help in developing throwing techniques? This workshop is for intermediate and advanced potters who want coaching on some wheel techniques they are finding somewhat challenging like throwing lids, centering large amounts of clay, pulling necks on bottles, throwing tall cylinders, etc. Come with your clay and tools, ready to begin promptly.

Leaf Workshop

Create a lovely soft slab leaf dish or bowl using leaves you bring from home. Bring a selection to offer more variety. Big leaves make great bowls. Some dried leaves will be available. Decorate with underglaze. Project will be glazed with clear by instructor and available for pickup in about a week.

   Gas Reduction

Prerequisite: non members must be enrolled in at least one other Early Spring Clay class or pay an additional $45.00 fee at start of class. All must register by May 8.

Learn how to fire an Alpine updraft gas kiln. This class is for experienced student interested in the process of reduction firing. Participant requirements: must have taken at least one beginning ceramics class, must have bisque work glazed for firing at cone 10 prior to May 16th and must be able to participate in a six hour firing shift on May 17th.

Schedule: Load kiln on May 16 at 5:00 pm. Fire kiln on May 17 at 7:00 am. Unload and clean up on May 20 at 4:00 pm.

Students not meeting the prerequisite may glaze during open lab the week of May 8 through 16.
